We were thrilled to be asked to carry out a full website rebuild, advertising and print magazine design for Pendennis, ensuring their principal marketing effectively communicates their brand values and unique heritage.

Cornwall has been the home of shipbuilders for hundreds of years, with the result being an enduring relationship between people and the sea that has formed over generations. With a reputation built over 35 years, Pendennis Shipyard is now one of the world’s leading superyacht refit and custom build facilities, renowned globally for its diverse sailing and motor yacht projects.

Based in a 14-acre waterfront location in the thriving maritime town of Falmouth, with an additional service centre in Barcelona, Pendennis employs over 450 highly skilled tradespeople and has seen its people-first ethos rewarded with over 20 awards since its foundation. Its heritage and experience include more than 300 refit projects and over 30 custom-made build projects, with the company being involved in works on some of the world’s most iconic yachts.

Website

Pendennis needed an online presence that reflected its reputation, and our team relished the task of immersing ourselves in the brand and learning more about its target audiences to achieve this goal.

Led by our understanding of UX (user experience) we collaborated in two workshops to consider Pendennis’ key audiences and the content that would directly support their priorities, needs, and business goals. We then set about creating a fluid journey throughout the site for all parties. This resulted in more focused case studies highlighting the key services of refit, restoration, and bespoke build, as well as a more searchable archive. We also included more prominent calls to action to contact Pendennis throughout the user journey on the website.

The marketing team at Pendennis now has access to a sophisticated site that can easily update content as required. Using content elements that can be interchanged and built up as needed, the team has the ability to create and edit pages to suit their needs, while always ensuring coherent design.

Creatively upholding the Pendennis brand, we’ve created an immersive and impactful website which works seamlessly across all channels – not least mobile – and of course, on the high seas!

Voyage magazine

Pendennis’ in-house magazine, Voyage, is a high-quality publication with an established pedigree. It’s also the brand’s principal marketing tool at elite events such as Monaco Yacht Show.

We inherited the magazine’s existing design, carrying out an audit to review its grid, layout and typography. This meant we were able to draw on the success of what came before, while establishing new editorial ground rules that allow Pendennis’ impressive imagery to hold centre stage.

To begin the creative process, we hosted an editorial meeting to discuss the key themes we wanted to explore and consider how we could cover these within the magazine. Alongside showcasing the brand’s stunning visuals, Voyage provides an opportunity to unpack the incredible stories behind Pendennis’ refits, restorations and rebuilds, giving a snapshot of the skill, care and thought that goes into each. With this in mind, we became an extension of the team, thinking about how stories could editorially form a solution.

With the page plan and design agreed upon, we set about rolling the content out across the magazine’s spreads. The result is a considered piece of print that reflects the care and quality inherent within any Pendennis project.

Advertising

As a luxury brand, Pendennis advertises across several high-profile platforms and publications, including Boat International and SuperYacht Times.

So, when it came to creating advertising for the brand, we wanted to find ways to create real impact, and allow Pendennis to stand out from the crowd. While taking lessons from past adverts, we advised changing tack from the superyacht industry norms.

One of Pendennis’ key strengths is the craftsmanship that goes into its projects, and the skill of its team. From initial design to engineering and carpentry, a passion for detail and craft runs through everything, and it was this aspect that we chose to highlight.

Following initial concepts, we recommended commissioning a specialist photo shoot with advertising at its heart. This allowed Pendennis to create an image library celebrating its team, marking an immediate difference from other companies in the sector.
